Home Flights Hotels Diary

Montreal Pierre Elliott Trudeau / Dorval

I left the hotel around noon and took a cab to the airport. The ride took approximately 35 minutes and it was a flat fee of 38 CAD. However, as I handed 100 CAD to the driver, he gave me only 40 CAD back. I am not sure if this was a mistake by him or by me, might it as it be, it was too late as I noticed it, because he was already in his car and had left.

I decided not to think further on it and headed inside for the check in. The designated check in counter for First and Star Gold Passenger were busy but the Economy Class counter was empty, so I moved over to this counter. The agent was able to check me in all the way to Düsseldorf and I was happy to notice that I got an Economy Plus Seat on the flight from Chicago to Frankfurt.

I filled out the customs declaration I was given during check in and headed for the US immigration. It took a few minutes before I got fingerprinted and then I headed to the Maple Leaf Lounge in the concourse with the US gates. I got me a glass of Chardonnay and some vegetables and something to read and watched the planes – the Lufthansa flight from Munich just arrived as I was waiting there – made a call to airoli and read in the papers.

A few minutes before the announced boarding time, I left the lounge and walked the long way to the far end of the concourse where gate A 83 was located. Boarding had not started yet and was a little bit delayed, but finally the boarding announcement was made and asking First Class Passengers as well as elite member to board the aircraft. No call of Global Service or 1K, just for First Class, Star Gold and Star Silver Customers.

I was greeted by a flight attendant as I entered the plane and headed for my seat 7 F. I stored my carry on in the overhead compartment and my laptop underneath the seat in front of me. The plane filled with fellow passengers but was not completely full and so I had a free seat next to me.

The plane was like the one on my flight to Montreal in very good shape and not very old.

We pushed back around 14:38 and taxied for the runway 28. We had to wait until an American Eagle flight had landed and then it was finally our turn at and we climbed in the sunny sky above Montreal.

After five minutes in flight the sign for the use of electronic devices were switched off, while the seat belt signs remained on. The crew began to prepare the service. They did the service individually, they did not use the cart. I opted of a Tonic Water and since the the tray table was not flat, the glas slided down. I could stop it, but some Tonic Water spilled on the seat and my jacket lying there. The flight attendant apologized, but to me it was not really a huge problem. My jacket was only a little bit wet and nothing dropped on the laptop I had on my knees working on this trip report.

In the meantime the captain had turned off the seat belt signs and we cruised over a partly cloudy sky towards Chicago's O'Hare International airport.

The crew did another beverage service offering refills and like the crew on my flight to Montreal settled down in the last rows and read in a book, did some paperwork or chatted. But from my impression they were less attentive, on the other hand they were friendly and charming like the crew on the flight to Montreal on the Saturday before.

In the region of Grand Rapids the sky cleared and you could see the ground. We circled over the northern suburb of Chicago and flew in western direction before we made a U-turn and touched down around 16:00 local time. We taxied for quite some time giving nice view to the international terminal and the planes sitting there at the gate, among them a RJ, LH, and others.

We arrived a gate C 3, the very same gate where I had departed the Saturday before.
